Post an interesting wikipedia link you've found
Being the nerdy type I am, I've spent many a time on wikipedia during alcohol induced recoveries reading about some amazing things that I've never known before.

So I thought i'd create this thread so that you can post your favorite wikipedia links that you've found that are awesome:

The first I heard about this was during an episode of the X Files:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event

I had one of these when I was growing up, but could never get it right:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubik's_Cube

This guy created one of the largest empires this planets ever seen, crazy considering his origins:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genghis_Khan

You may think Kosciuszko is the highest Australian mountain, but Mawson Peak on Heard Island now holds the title:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heard_I...Donald_Islands

This is the deepest part of the oceans and can fit Everest with heaps of room to spare:

lol @ Kosciuszko, Heard Island is an external Australian territory, closer to Madagascar and Antarctica than it is Australia. Interesting fact though

My favourite is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toilet_seat

To determine the treatment of frostbite, prisoners were taken outside in freezing weather and left with exposed arms, periodically drenched with water until frozen solid. The arm was later amputated; the doctor would repeat the process on the victim's upper arm to the shoulder. After both arms were gone, the doctors moved on to the legs until only a head and torso remained. The victim was then used for plague and pathogens experiments.

The US also offered immunity to some of the Japanese involved, in return for the scientific information obtained from those experiments.
The bombs were dropped to end the war, ending unit 731 etc was just a small part of that.

I really admire Messner's "by fair means" philosophy. He was the first to climb Everest without oxygen, at a time when it was thought impossible. If you look at what people like Sir Chris Bonnington were doing at the time (laying siege to the mountain with 8-10 climbers and a team of 200 Sherpas), Messner's achievements are amazing. Compare that to what Everest has become today: a high altitude garbage dump, where clients are guided up fixed ropes by guides who only care about getting them to the top. Dude is a badass.

On that Unit 731... were not similar experiments carried out by the Nazis? I remember reading a book by a Jewish doctor who was forced to conduct similar experiments for years. There were incredible amounts of information, upon which a lot of modern medicine is based, that was gleaned from these experiments.

You know, as gruesome as all that unit 731 stuff is and as reprehensible and morally objectable it is, we wouldn't know half the stuff we know today about medicine and how the body reacts to different things if it hadn't been done.

I feel dirty saying that.

unggh I just read it again and my soul died a little bit.

Oh jesus christ unit 731 is fucking horrible. Those poor, poor people.

The whole mentality behind it though is that the Nazis / Japanese were operating on people they classified as animals, so doing that to a person they had captured was the same as doing it to a frog.

Interesting bloke, worth $5 billion at his peak. There's corrupt African dictators, then there's this guy:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobutu_Sese_Seko

"In 1968 Pierre Mulele, Lumumba's Minister of Education and later a rebel leader during the 1964 Simba rebellion, was lured out of exile in Brazzaville on the assumption that he would be amnestied, but was tortured and killed by Mobutu's forces. While Mulele was still alive, his eyes were gouged out, his genitals were ripped off, and his limbs were amputated one by one.[14] Mobutu later moved away from torture and murder, and switched to a new tactic, buying off political rivals. He used the slogan "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer still" to describe his tactic of co-opting political opponents through bribery."

Oh and President Reagan thought he was a good bloke,

"Mobutu enjoyed a very warm relationship with the Reagan Administration, through financial donations. During Reagan's presidency, Mobutu visited the White House three times, and criticism of Zaire's human rights record by the U.S. was effectively muted. During a state visit by Mobutu in 1983, Reagan praised the Zairian strongman as "a voice of good sense and goodwill."

Oh yeah, ITB:

to understand the mentality of these people and their horrendous crimes, you have also consider the type of world they lived in at the time and how much it warped morality.

Eh, without being racist African's see violence a lot differently to Westerners, generally speaking they are a lot less affected by it. It's just a different view, that's all. My dad was born and grew up in Zimbabwe, the first dead body he saw was a person on the street in a pool of blood with a screwdriver in the back of their head. I guess they are so desensitized to it cos that kind of thing is so prevalent.

Each Disneyland has a secret elite club built into it.. Club 33

Quote:

Club 33 is a private club located in the heart of the New Orleans Square section of Disneyland. Officially maintained as a secret feature of the theme park, the entrance of the club is located next to the Blue Bayou Restaurant at "33 Royal Street" with the entrance recognizable by an ornate address plate with the number 33 engraved on it. When riding Pirates of the Caribbean, just as the ride departs, the Blue Bayou restaurant is visible, but the balconies above it are actually a part of Club 33.

Great thread.

Re: human experimentation, don't forget our buddies in the US (and by extension us, like it or not) have a pretty solid history of it too. (Can't vouch for the integrity of the rest of that site, but feel free to research all those facts independently.)

Quote:

The grandfather paradox is a proposed paradox of time travel first described (in this exact form) by the science fiction writer René Barjavel in his 1943 book Le Voyageur Imprudent (The Imprudent Traveller).[1] Nevertheless, similar (and even more mind-boggling) paradoxes had already been described, for instance by Robert A. Heinlein in "By His Bootstraps". The paradox is this: suppose a man travelled back in time and killed his biological grandfather before the latter met the traveller's grandmother. As a result, one of the traveller's parents (and by extension the traveller himself) would never have been conceived. This would imply that he could not have travelled back in time after all, which means the grandfather would still be alive, and the traveller would have been conceived allowing him to travel back in time and kill his grandfather. Thus each possibility seems to imply its own negation, a type of logical paradox.

Despite the name, the grandfather paradox does not exclusively regard the impossibility of one's own birth. Rather, it regards any action that makes impossible the ability to travel back in time in the first place. The paradox's namesake example is merely the most commonly thought of when one considers the whole range of possible actions. Another example would be using scientific knowledge to invent a time machine, then going back in time and (whether through murder or otherwise) impeding a scientist's work that would eventually lead to the very information that you used to invent the time machine.

An equivalent paradox is known (in philosophy) as autoinfanticide, going back in time and killing oneself as a baby.[2]

The grandfather paradox has been used to argue that backwards time travel must be impossible. However, a number of possible ways of avoiding the paradox have been proposed, such as the idea that the timeline is fixed and unchangeable, the idea that the time traveller will end up in a parallel timeline, while the timeline in which the traveller was born remains independent or the possibility of the time traveller saving his grandfather's life instead of killing him so that he could later be born and travel back in time so that he could save his grandfather's life, exactly the opposite of the original paradox.

Another paradox similar to that was developed by Stephen Hawking in his TV Documents, Episode 2 in 2010 series, Into The Universe With Stephen Hawking. According to the paradox, a young scientist travels into the past one minute with a time machine he just built. With him he took a gun and killed his past self that was loading the gun, instantly killing him. The question is though, who fired the shot? The loop stays open with the person being dead who fired the shot. According to the theory however, there is always a cause before an effect saying that the future man is a copy of the past man, meaning he killed a different person.

Head explode.
